Who We Are and Where We Work

We are your local elected council, dedicated to representing residents across the entire community, from Swffryd in the South to Bournville in the North. Our members are either democratically elected or co-opted to represent your views on a Ward-by-Ward basis.

We are a Statutory Body operating under the Local Government Act 1972.

Abertillery operated as a Town Council from 1974 until 1985. Following Local Government Reorganisation, the community opted to form a single Community Council, embracing both the Abertillery and Llanhilleth areas.

Working at the Heart of the Community

We believe in supporting local people and organisations at a grassroots level. Here are some of the key areas where our efforts make a difference:

Key Achievements and Support

  • Promoting Safety: We actively contribute to Community Safety, notably by purchasing and maintaining over a dozen publicly-available, life-saving defibrillators throughout the area.
  • Supporting Young People: We fund detached youth workers whose engagement has successfully helped to deliver a significant reduction in anti-social behaviour across the area.
  • Local Funding: We are proud to distribute tens of thousands of pounds each year through grant funding to support a wide range of local community groups and organisations.
  • Events and Celebrations: We fund and support many popular local events, including Abertillery’s annual Party in the Park, free Summer Cinema, Christmas and St David’s Day concerts, and community festivals like Aberfest, Springfest, and Winterfest.
  • Community Spirit: We help brighten the area by funding traditional Christmas lights, take part in Remembrance Sunday parades, and support activities that bring our residents together.
