Abertillery could be the UK Town of Culture 2028! ![]()
We have officially entered the competition to become the UK Town of Culture 2028!
In celebration of our town’s culture and heritage, we have submitted a digital postcard to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
Thank you to Cllr Ralph Henderson MBE for writing the postcard text.
You can view our entry alongside others from across the country on the official UK Town of Culture Digital Map below:

Plain Text:
“Surely Cwmtillery is the loveliest valley in the whole of Wales” – Archdeacon Coxe, 1799.
From Boyesen’s World-class sculpture of the ‘Guardian’ in the south to Cwmtillery Lakes in the north, this diadem inspired L.S. Lowry to paint his largest canvas and poets such as Arael to rhapsodise about Tyleri, Welsh for the ‘mellifluous sound of the babbling brook’.
Likened to Austria, with its cornucopia of Choirs and champion band, it is more Salzburg than Linz!
Metropole entertainment has ranged from Charlie Chaplin to the Kinks! Coxe’s prescience prevails!
“Appetitio sequitur inspiration!” – Aspiration is the sequel to inspiration.
From Abertillery.
